Free things to do with toddlers in Melbourne
Melbourne is kind to families with toddlers, partly because so many of its free places have been designed with small children in mind. Calm bay beaches such as Williamstown, Elwood and Half Moon Bay give shallow water and soft sand. The Royal Botanic Gardens offer lawns and the Ian Potter Children's Garden for gentle exploring. Yarra Glen Adventure Playground and Royal Park Nature Play give climbing and digging for steadier walkers. On wet or cold days, galleries and libraries open up. ACMI and the National Gallery of Victoria have spaces that welcome small visitors, and local libraries run story time and have soft corners. These places are quieter than they look and forgiving of noise. Plan the day around naps and meals, and keep it short. A toddler who has two good hours will be happier than one dragged through six. Bring double the snacks you expect to need, plus a change of clothes for the toddler, and probably for you. Melbourne weather moves fast, so a hat and a warm layer should be in the bag, even in summer. The listing tells you about fencing, shade and facilities, which matter more than the equipment. Do not worry about seeing everything. One good place, a long sit on a rug and a sandy snack is a full day.

Before you go
Best for which ages
These places suit children from walking age up to around four, with babies welcome in a carrier or on a rug. A bigger brother or sister will usually be happy at the same bay beach or nature playground, which saves splitting up. Children close to three can handle wider adventures than a one-year-old, so match the place to the child in front of you.
What to bring
Nappies, wipes, a change of clothes and a sunhat. Pack plenty of snacks and water, and a rug for the grass. A familiar toy can calm a meltdown, and a bag for wet clothes and a towel for the car seat save the drive home.
Parking and facilities
Look for places with parking close to the entrance, toilets and a baby change. Not every park has baby change, so check the listing. Libraries and larger galleries usually have good facilities for parents. Park close if you can, because carrying a tired toddler and a bag across a big car park is no fun.
Best time of year
Warm months suit beaches and water play, with mornings best for comfort. Cooler, wetter weather suits libraries and indoor places. Spring and autumn are ideal for gardens, with mild days and fewer crowds. Spring is kind to small skin and short attention spans, with mild days and gardens in flower.
Prams and accessibility
Many gardens and playgrounds have paved paths for prams, though sand and grass are harder. Libraries and galleries have lifts. Bluestone cobbles and gravel in the older parts of the city can jolt a pram, so a carrier gives you options. Wet pavers at splash zones turn slippery fast, so keep one hand on the toddler and choose shoes with grip.
Beaches, rock pools and ocean baths
Swim between the red and yellow flags. Patrol seasons and hours on each listing come from the surf club or council page.

Questions parents ask
- Where can I take a toddler in Melbourne for free on a rainy day?
- Libraries with story time and child-friendly gallery spaces are the best options. ACMI and the NGV are in the city, and local libraries are everywhere. Check session times in advance.
- Which Melbourne beaches are good for toddlers?
- Calm bay beaches with shallow water, like Williamstown, Elwood and Half Moon Bay, work well. Stay within arm's reach, and swim between the flags when they are up.
- How long should a toddler outing in Melbourne last?
- Shorter is better. One or two hours timed around naps and meals beats a long day. Go home while they are still happy, and the next outing will be an easier sell.
- Are Melbourne playgrounds safe for toddlers?
- Many are, though bay beaches, creeks and ponds mean water is never far, and fencing is not a given. Check the listing and supervise closely near water and roads. Look for a separate toddler area where possible.
