Volunteers from the Altona Life Saving Club patrol a designated section most weekends and public holidays from late November through to around Easter each year; the patrolled swimming area sits in front of the patrol tower 100 metres east of the pier, marked by red and yellow flags. It has year-round beach matting, free beach wheelchair hire on summer weekends (12 noon to 5 pm) and an accessible changing facility with a hoist at nearby Weaver's Reserve. The council lists barbecue areas, public amenities and metered parking; Altona Station is a 500 m walk.
