Free beaches and rock pools in Melbourne
Melbourne's beaches are a different animal from Sydney's, and many families prefer them. Port Phillip Bay is a big sheltered inlet, so most of its beaches have shallow edges, gentle waves and warm shallows in summer. Williamstown, Elwood, Middle Park, Beaumaris, Mordialloc, Aspendale and Chelsea all sit on that bay, and their long, flat sand suits toddlers, sandcastle builders and children who are not ready for a wave. The Brighton Beach Bathing Boxes are a colourful photo stop while you are there. The ocean side is a different story. Beaches out on the Surf Coast, such as Bancoora near Breamlea, face open water and need proper care, with swimming only between the flags where patrols operate. Phillip Island and the Mornington Peninsula sit between the two, with some calm bay beaches and some rough ones, so read the listing. Whatever the beach, the rules are the same. Swim between the red and yellow flags. No flags means no lifeguards. Patrols usually run in summer at the main beaches, and the listing says what to expect. The bay can look glassy and still be cold and windy, so pack a layer, even on a nice day. Carry a bucket and a small net. Tides move, and so do the rock pools and sandbars.

Before you go
Best for which ages
Bay beaches suit babies, toddlers and beginners, because the water is calm and shallow near the shore. Primary-age children enjoy the sandbars and the rock edges. Ocean beaches are better for strong swimmers with an adult in the water, and teenagers who want to surf or bodyboard.
What to bring
Hats, sunscreen and rash vests, plus a windproof layer, because even summer afternoons can turn breezy. A towel, a dry change of clothes and a bucket and spade go a long way. Pack water and snacks, as the walk back to the car can be long.
Parking and facilities
Popular bay beaches fill on hot weekends, and street parking is often time limited. Trains and trams reach a few of them, so consider that for Williamstown or Elwood. Toilets and showers are common at bigger beaches, so use the listing to check.
Best time of year
Summer is the swimming season, when patrols operate at the main beaches and the bay is warmest. The shoulder months of late spring and early autumn are quieter. In winter, the beach is for walking, kites and collecting shells rather than swimming.
Prams and accessibility
Many bay beaches have paved paths or boardwalks beside the sand, which suit prams and wheelchairs. Soft sand itself is heavy going, and some beaches have steps or steep access. Check the listing for each place to see what the entry is like.
Beaches, rock pools and ocean baths
Swim between the red and yellow flags. Patrol seasons and hours on each listing come from the surf club or council page.

Questions parents ask
- Which Melbourne beach is best for a toddler's first swim?
- Look for a calm bay beach with shallow water and nearby facilities, such as Williamstown, Elwood or Beaumaris. The listing describes each. Stay close, keep to the flagged area when patrolled, and leave if the wind picks up.
- Do Melbourne beaches have lifeguards?
- Patrols operate at the main beaches in summer, but not everywhere and not all the time. A bay beach with no flags up has nobody watching the water, however calm it looks. Check the listing, and if in doubt, stay out of the water.
- Is the water in Port Phillip Bay clean enough to swim?
- The bay is monitored, and water quality can drop after heavy rain. Local authorities post warnings, so check before you swim, especially after storms. Children should avoid swallowing the water.
- What are the Brighton Bathing Boxes?
- They are brightly painted beach huts lined up along the sand at Brighton, a popular spot to look at and photograph. They are private, so look, do not touch, and use the open beach nearby for your own day.
