Free beaches and rock pools in Cairns
The northern beaches of Cairns are long, quiet and fringed with palms, and they are the reason many families move here. Palm Cove, Trinity, Clifton, Kewarra, Holloways, Yorkeys Knob and Ellis Beach each have their own feel, and Four Mile Beach at Port Douglas stretches as far as a small child can wander. In the city itself, the Esplanade Lagoon gives families a safe, free place to swim when the sea is not. The key fact about Cairns beaches is that they are not always for swimming. Saltwater crocodiles live along the coast, and stingers are a risk in the warmer months. Some beaches have stinger nets during the season, and some have lifesaving patrols, but not all do, and the arrangements change. Swim only between the red and yellow flags, and only where the signs say swimming is allowed. No flags means no lifeguards. That still leaves plenty to do. Children can dig in the sand, hunt for shells, walk the tide line and paddle at the water's edge only where it is clearly safe. Palm trees give shade, and many foreshores have playgrounds and picnic spots nearby, though the listing says what is actually at each place. Go early, bring shade and keep an eye on the sky. A beach day in Cairns is a mix of looking, walking and cooling off in the right place, and it is better for knowing the rules.

Before you go
Best for which ages
Beach walks, sandcastles and shell hunting suit all ages, while swimming is only for signed or netted areas. The lagoon suits toddlers through to teenagers. Older children may enjoy a long walk on Four Mile or Trinity, while toddlers are happy with a bucket and a shady spot.
What to bring
A pop-up shade, hats, rash shirts, plenty of water and sunscreen. Pack a change of clothes, a towel, sand toys and a bag for rubbish. Add vinegar in a small bottle if the local advice says so, and learn the stinger first aid on the signs.
Parking and facilities
Parking and facilities vary by beach, so check the listing before you set out. Some beaches have toilets, showers and playgrounds close by, while others are simple strips of sand. Do not assume a kiosk or a patrol, and bring what you need.
Best time of year
The drier months bring cooler weather and a calmer sea, though stingers can still be a worry, so follow signs. The Wet is hot and humid, with storms and sometimes closures. Early morning is the best time to enjoy the sand in comfort.
How to make a day of it
Start with a beach walk, swim in a netted or lagoon area, then head for shade and lunch. Finish at a foreshore playground if energy remains. On windy or stormy days, use the lagoon or head to a garden instead.
Beaches, rock pools and ocean baths
Swim between the red and yellow flags. Patrol seasons and hours on each listing come from the surf club or council page.

Questions parents ask
- Which Cairns beach is best for a toddler?
- It depends on the day, the tide and whether there are nets or patrols. Palm Cove is a popular pick for its shade and calm feel, and the Esplanade Lagoon is a safe swimming choice. Check the listing for what is there.
- Do Cairns beaches have stinger nets?
- Some do, in season, but not all. Rules and arrangements change, so look for signs on the day. If there is no net and no sign, treat the sea as unsafe for swimming.
- Can we swim in the sea at Cairns?
- Only in areas that are clearly signed and patrolled or netted, and only between the flags where flags are used. Crocodiles and stingers mean the sea is not a free-for-all.
- Are there rock pools near Cairns?
- The coast is mostly sandy, so rock pooling is not the main attraction. Some headlands have rocks at low tide, but crocodile and stinger risks apply, so keep to signed areas and ask locally.
