Free things to do with toddlers in Cairns

Cairns is kind to toddlers if you pick your places carefully. The city has gentle beaches, a lagoon, botanic gardens, a nature play space and plenty of shaded playgrounds, and many of them cost nothing. Palm Cove, the Esplanade Lagoon, Cairns Botanic Gardens, Centenary Lakes, Muddy's Playground, Goomboora Park and Holloways Beach are the kind of places parents return to again and again. The central rule is that water needs a closer eye here. The sea has crocodile and stinger risk, so toddlers belong in the lagoon, in netted areas where they exist in season, or in signed freshwater spots, with an adult within arm's reach at all times. Even shallow water can be dangerous for little ones. On the sand, children can dig, run and chase waves while you stay close. Heat and humidity are the other challenge. Toddlers tire quickly and overheat easily, so aim for early mornings, take shade with you and offer drinks often. Nature play spaces are brilliant here, because mud, sticks and leaves are as entertaining as any toy. Plan one main outing and one easy extra. A morning at the lagoon, lunch under a tree and a nap on the way home is a good day. Bring spare clothes, wipes and patience, and let your toddler decide when to move on.

Before you go

Best for which ages

Babies and toddlers up to three suit short, shaded outings with soft ground and safe water. The lagoon and gardens are good for most small children, while beaches work best with close supervision. Older toddlers will enjoy playgrounds and nature play.

What to bring

Swim nappies, sun hats, rash shirts, sunscreen and spare clothes. Pack wipes, snacks and plenty of water. A pram with a shade cover helps for naps, and a carrier is useful on tracks. Bring a towel and a bag for wet things.

Parking and facilities

Check the listing for toilets, baby change, shade and parking, because they differ. Many family spots in Cairns have good facilities, but not all do. Do not assume a cafe, and carry supplies. A pop-up shade and a picnic rug give you your own comfortable base wherever you are.

Best time of year

The drier months are easiest, while the Wet is hot and humid with storms. Early mornings are best for everything outdoors. Avoid midday heat, and keep toddlers out of floodwater and fast creeks. Cooler mornings in the drier months suit little ones best of all.

How to make a day of it

Choose one main stop and one easy extra, like the lagoon followed by a garden picnic. Keep naps in mind, and leave before the meltdown. A gentle day tends to be a good day. Always bring a snack, and let your toddler decide when it is time to go.
