Mount Hypipamee crater, Mount Hypipamee National Park
Last updated October 2026
Mount Hypipamee National Park, on the Kennedy Highway 25 km south of Atherton, protects a deep, cylindrical volcanic pipe with a lake at the bottom. The Crater track is an 800 m return sealed track (Grade 2, allow 30 minutes) through rainforest to a fenced viewing platform over the crater; supervise children closely and stay behind the fence. The Dinner Falls circuit (1.2 km, Grade 3, allow 45 minutes) is an uneven, sometimes steep alternative return past cascades in the headwaters of the Barron River. The day-use area has picnic tables and toilets; there are no bins. Look for possums and Lumholtz's tree-kangaroos dozing in branches. There are no wheelchair-accessible facilities, and dogs are not allowed.
Facts checked against the venue's own website on 23 October 2026.
