Rex Smeal Park Playground

Last updated October 2026

Rex Smeal Park Playground in Port Douglas opened in July 2024 beside the park's existing swings, which were kept as part of the new design. Douglas Shire Council says the equipment was designed as an equal access space that recognises the needs of children with different levels of ability, and a wheelchair and pram boardwalk links the playground to the car park and amenity block. The large fig tree that shaded the playground is being removed in October 2026 for safety; the council plans to transplant mature fig trees and install shade sails over the playground. Within a short walk are La Cucina & Bar restaurant (about 215 m), Sassi restaurant (about 217 m) and Java Cafe (about 245 m).
