Lake Eacham, Crater Lakes National Park

Last updated October 2026

Lake Eacham is a clear blue volcanic crater lake surrounded by rainforest in Crater Lakes National Park, about 68 km drive up the Gillies Range from Cairns. The 3 km lake circuit track (Grade 2, allow 1 hour) has forest-fringed views of the lake, and saw-shelled turtles, eastern water dragons and musky rat-kangaroos are often seen. The Lake Eacham children's walk is a 1.4 km return Grade 2 track with activities for kids; it is suitable for prams but steep in places. The day-use area has picnic tables, shelters, free electric barbecues and flush toilets, and people swim, snorkel and paddle in the lake. A freshwater crocodile lives in the lake: Queensland Parks asks visitors not to approach it and to take care if swimming. Fishing and dogs are not allowed. Open 24 hours.

Facts checked against the venue's own website on 23 October 2026.
