Cairns Esplanade Lagoon

Last updated August 2026

Cairns' actual ocean beaches aren't safely swimmable for most of the year - marine stingers and estuarine crocodiles rule out casual swimming along the natural shoreline. The Esplanade Lagoon is the city's answer: a free, 4,800m² saltwater pool built right on the waterfront, with a high sea wall separating it entirely from the ocean, so it's croc-free and stinger-free year-round. It's designed with a genuinely shallow toddler paddling zone with small fountains at one end, gradually deepening to about 1.5m at the far end near the fish sculpture fountain, plus a sandy "beach" edge. What to Bring Swimmers, sun protection A picnic blanket for the surrounding grassed area Best Age Range All ages - the shallow end genuinely suits toddlers, unlike a real beach here. Good to Know Free, no booking, lifeguards on duty throughout the day. Shaded trees, BBQs and picnic tables around the lawn.
