Free beaches and rock pools in Gold Coast
A Gold Coast beach day is a different thing depending on which stretch you choose. Burleigh has its rocky headland and a wide sweep of sand, with a headland walk for when the swimming is done. Kirra and the southern end are known for their waves, which is useful to know: they can be powerful, and they are for watching as much as swimming. On the Broadwater side, sheltered spots give little ones somewhere to splash without being knocked flat. The common thread is space. These beaches are wide and long, with room for a family to spread out and still feel like they have the sand to themselves. Patrols operate in summer at the main beaches, and the flags tell you where it is safe to swim. Outside patrol season, treat the surf with respect and keep children at the water's edge. The best Gold Coast beach days start early, before the heat gets serious, and finish when the afternoon wind starts up and the sand turns into a sandblaster. Bring more shade than you think you need, and rinse everyone at the showers before they get in the car. Rock pools at the headlands add another reason to go at low tide, but let the listing guide you on which ones suit small feet.

Before you go
Best for which ages
Babies and toddlers do best on sheltered, shallow spots where the waves are small and the sand is soft. Primary-age kids will want a patrolled surf beach, a bodyboard and a parent in the water with them. Teenagers can handle more surf, but the flags still matter, and a rip does not care how strong a swimmer you are.
What to bring
Sun protection comes first: rashies, hats and real shade, because the coastal sun is harsh even on cooler days. Add a spare set of dry clothes, a bucket and spade, water shoes for rocky patches and a bag for sandy towels. A beach tent makes a long morning with little ones far easier.
Parking and facilities
The popular beaches fill early on summer weekends and school holidays, so arrive before the rush or be ready to walk with all your gear. Many have toilets, showers and a cafe nearby, but the listing says what is actually there. Have a payment method ready in case parking is paid.
Best time of year
Summer is peak swimming season with patrols at the main beaches, but it is also hot, busy and storm-prone. Autumn is often the sweet spot, with warm water and thinner crowds. Winter is for walking the sand and exploring headlands rather than swimming, and it is lovely for it.
How to make a day of it
Pair a morning swim with a lunch picnic in a nearby park, then finish with an ice cream or an easy stroll along the foreshore. If the family still has energy, a headland track or a playground close to the beach keeps the day going without another drive.
Beaches, rock pools and ocean baths
Swim between the red and yellow flags. Patrol seasons and hours on each listing come from the surf club or council page.

Questions parents ask
- Which Gold Coast beach is best for small children?
- Look for sheltered spots where the water stays shallow and the waves are gentle, rather than the famous surf breaks. The listing for each beach tells you more about the water and the facilities, and a patrolled beach gives extra peace of mind.
- Do lifeguards work all year?
- Not at every beach and not at every time. Patrols run in summer at the main beaches, and cover is reduced outside that season. If there are no flags, there are no lifeguards, so keep children at the very edge of the water.
- Are Gold Coast beaches safe for swimming?
- They can be, if you swim between the red and yellow flags and watch the kids at all times. Surf and rips change quickly, so ask a lifeguard at a patrolled beach if you are unsure. Never swim alone, and keep away from rocks and creek mouths when the surf is up.
- Can we find rock pools on the Gold Coast?
- Yes, around the headlands, especially at low tide. They are good for crabs, shells and tiny fish, but the rocks can be slippery and waves can surprise you. Check the tide, keep children close and wear shoes with grip.
