Things to do with teenagers in Cairns
Cairns is where teenagers get the days they will talk about: a snorkel on the outer reef, white-water rafting on the Barron or the Tully, the giant swing at the skypark, a wake park and a mountain-bike trail network at Smithfield, and swimming holes under waterfalls that feel like a film set. None of it is cheap and most of it has a minimum age, so the listings here carry both.
The free side is strong too: the Esplanade skate plaza and lagoon, Crystal Cascades and the Boulders for a swim, and the Tablelands waterfall circuit if someone will drive. In the wet season the rivers are high and the rafting is at its best; in the dry the reef is calm and the stingers are gone from the beaches.
Each listing shows the minimum age and the price from.

Questions parents ask
- What is the minimum age for the reef trips?
- Most snorkel day trips take children of any age with an adult, but introductory diving starts at 12 and some adventure boats are 8 or 10 and over. The reef listings show each operator's rules and child prices.
- Can a 13 year old go white-water rafting?
- The gentler family rafting on the Barron takes younger teens; the Tully's bigger rapids are usually 13 and over. The listings show the minimum age for each river.
- Where can teens swim for free in Cairns?
- The Esplanade Lagoon, Crystal Cascades, Babinda Boulders and the Tablelands waterfalls. Swim where the signs allow, never in the creeks during floods, and not at the beaches in stinger season.
- Is there anything for a rainy afternoon?
- The aquarium, the escape room, the armour museum on the Tablelands, the cinema and the indoor climbing gym. Rain in Cairns is usually a burst, not a day, so plan around it.
