Kuranda Scenic Railway is a train trip from Cairns, via Freshwater, up to Kuranda. The 37 km line climbs 327 metres through rainforest, crossing 55 bridges and passing through 15 tunnels. Trains depart Cairns Station at 8:45am and 9:30am and Freshwater Station at 9:10am and 9:55am, arriving in Kuranda at 10:40am and 11:25am. Return trains leave Kuranda at 2:45pm and 3:30pm. Services run every day except Christmas Day, with some planned maintenance closures, and Gold Class runs only on the second morning and afternoon trains. As of October 2026, Heritage Class one-way fares are $58 adult and $29 child, or $87 and $43.50 return; a family fare (2 adults, 2 children) is $145 one way. Gold Class one-way fares are $115 adult and $86 child. Child fares cover ages 4 to 14, and children aged 0 to 3 travel free. Bookings are by phone on 1800 577 245. Arrive at the station at least 30 minutes before departure.
