Things to do with teenagers in Canberra

Canberra with a teenager is better than they expect, provided you do not lead with the museums. Lead with the karts, the trampoline park, the bouldering gyms in Fyshwick, the ropes course at Majura, the aqua park on the lake in summer and the alpine slide in the mountains, then slip in Questacon and the War Memorial, which win over most 14 year olds despite themselves.

The lake is for bikes and kayaks, and in winter a two-hour drive reaches the snow. The free list is strong: the lookouts at Ainslie and Black Mountain are real climbs, the galleries are free, the skate parks are good and the nature reserves have kangaroos at dusk.

Each listing shows the minimum age and the price from.
