Things to do with teenagers in Melbourne
Melbourne with a teenager is a city of good indoors and a few great outdoors. The indoors is obvious once it rains: escape rooms across the CBD and inner suburbs, a VR arena, the trampoline parks in every direction, bouldering gyms with teen sessions, laser tag and the arcades.
The outdoors needs a car: the Dandenongs for a proper climb and the steam train, the surf coast for a lesson at Torquay, the water parks and adventure parks on the fringe in summer, and the skate parks the councils keep free. In town, the galleries are free and genuinely teen-friendly, the Skydeck is the view, and the bay has kayak hire and the St Kilda pier.
Each listing shows the minimum age and the price from, because that is where plans go wrong.

Questions parents ask
- What is there for teenagers in Melbourne's CBD?
- Escape rooms and VR, the free galleries, ACMI, the Skydeck, the laneways and the river bikes. All are walkable from Flinders Street and the free tram zone covers most of it.
- Where can teens surf near Melbourne?
- Torquay and the surf coast, about 90 minutes away, with surf schools that take teenagers in group lessons. The bay beaches are for swimming and paddling, not surfing.
- Is there karting for teens?
- Yes: indoor tracks in the south-east and outdoor tracks on the fringe take 10 or 12 year olds in junior karts and 16 and overs in the fast ones. The listings show the age and height rules and the session prices.
- What free things do Melbourne teens actually like?
- The NGV and ACMI, the Yarra and bay trails on a bike, the skate parks, the bay beaches in summer and the Dandenongs' 1000 Steps. The free picks on this page are the teen-rated ones.
