Accessible and sensory-friendly things to do with kids in Canberra
Canberra is the easiest Australian city for a family with access needs, and it is not close. The national museums, galleries and the science centre are purpose-built, step-free, free or cheap, and nearly all of them run quiet mornings, relaxed sessions or sensory tours and lend sensory kits.
The lake has a sealed loop you can push a chair around, the arboretum and the big district parks have inclusive playgrounds with Liberty swings and accessible toilets, and the zoo publishes an access map. There is no beach, which removes one hard problem, and the nature reserves have a few boardwalks rated accessible by the park service.
Parking is generous and usually has accessible bays. Everything here comes from the venue's own page; read the fact line under each place and check the linked access page before you go.
29 places in Canberra state access or sensory facts on their own page: 11 step-free · 10 sensory-friendly sessions · 8 accessible toilet · 2 Changing Places · 0 beach wheelchair · 1 pool hoist · 10 all-abilities playgrounds.

- Where are the all-abilities playgrounds?
- The arboretum's pod playground, Boundless at Commonwealth Park and several district parks have wheelchair-accessible equipment, Liberty swings and sensory play. The playgrounds section lists them with what each page names.
- Can we get around the lake with a wheelchair?
