Accessible and sensory-friendly things to do with kids in Cairns
Cairns is built around one flat, free, fully accessible place: the Esplanade, with its saltwater lagoon, ramped entry, accessible change rooms and a long sealed boardwalk that takes a wheelchair all the way to the skate plaza and the playgrounds. That matters here because the beaches are not for swimming in the warm months and the rainforest is mostly steps.
The good news is that the big tropical attractions have thought about access: the cableway and scenic railway publish wheelchair and pram guides, the aquarium and the wildlife parks are step-free, and several reef operators carry people who cannot climb a ladder. For sensory needs, the aquarium and the main library run quiet sessions, and the lagoon is quiet early.
In the hinterland, a handful of waterfall lookouts and boardwalks are rated accessible by the park service and are listed here with the grade. Everything comes from the venue's or council's own page; read the fact line and check the linked access page before you go.

Questions parents ask
- Can a wheelchair user get to the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns?
- Yes, with the right operator. Some reef pontoons have lifts into the water and accessible toilets, and some boats take wheelchairs on board. The reef listings here say what each operator states; call to confirm the vessel on your date.
- Is the Esplanade Lagoon accessible?
- It has a gentle ramped entry, accessible change rooms and lifeguards, and it is free. Go early in the morning for the quietest water.
- Which rainforest walks are wheelchair-friendly?
- A few boardwalks and lookouts near Kuranda, at Mossman Gorge and on the Tablelands are rated accessible by the park service, and the cableway stations have boardwalks. The walks section lists them with the park grade.
- Are there sensory-friendly sessions in Cairns?
- Fewer than the big cities. The aquarium and library run quiet sessions in the school holidays and the cinema runs sensory screenings; the table on this page links the venue page to check dates.
