Butterfly aviary and breeding laboratory in Kuranda village open daily 9.30am-3.30pm; child entry (4-14) $15, adults $25, family $65.

The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is at 8 Rob Veivers Drive in Kuranda village, about 30 minutes' drive from Cairns and a short walk from the Skyrail terminal and Kuranda Scenic Railway station. It is open daily 9.30am to 3.30pm except Christmas Day. Visitors walk boardwalks through an aviary of around 1,200 butterflies, take a 30-minute guided tour included in entry, visit the breeding laboratory housing up to 4,000 caterpillars, and see exhibits including a butterfly wing under a microscope and a UV room. Allow about 20 minutes beyond the tour for the exhibits. As of October 2026 entry is $25 for adults, $15 for children aged 4 to 14 and $65 for a family of two adults and two children; locals get 20% off online with ID. Tickets can be bought on arrival. No food or sugary drinks are allowed in the aviary; there is no cafe on site.
