Families' Pick 2026 · Cairns: picked by the Funtivities team as a standout for families in Cairns.

Last updated October 2026

World Heritage rainforest park near Kuranda with an easy 800 m canopy boardwalk to the Barron Falls lookout.

Barron Gorge National Park, 18 km (lower section) and 27 km (upper section) north-west of Cairns, is World Heritage rainforest around the Barron River gorge and Barron Falls. The easiest family walk is the Din Din Barron Falls lookout track near Kuranda: an 800 m elevated boardwalk (about 15 minutes one way) through the rainforest canopy to lookouts over the falls and the Barron Falls railway platform, where you can watch Skyrail gondolas overhead and the Kuranda Scenic Railway pull in twice a day. It is wheelchair accessible with assistance and there are toilets in the car park; drive 3.5 km from Kuranda along Barron Falls Road. Longer tracks start near Kamerunga and Speewah, and commercial operators run rafting on the river. Camping, campfires and fishing are not allowed. The park warns visitors about crocodiles and cassowaries. The Din Din day-use area and track will close for maintenance from 23 November to 4 December 2026. As of October 2026.

Facts checked against the venue's own website on 17 October 2026.
