Free council wetland park at Smithfield with a 420 m boardwalk, bird hides, lakes, BBQs and picnic areas.

Cattana Wetlands Environmental Park is an 80-hectare council nature park at Smithfield, about 20 km from the Cairns CBD, built on a former cane farm and sand quarry. A 420 m boardwalk runs through feather palm forest past freshwater and saltwater lakes, and there are bird hides and viewing platforms; more than 200 bird species have been recorded. A free self-guided tour of about one hour follows interpretive signs from the car park past Jabiru Lake and its jetty to the Franco Cattana Boardwalk, on shaded paths with seating and water bubblers. Facilities include BBQs, picnic areas and toilets. Entry is free and it is open 5.30am to 7pm daily. Fishing is not allowed, and dogs are not allowed except registered support animals. Council suggests mosquito repellent, especially in the wet season. Access is via Dunne Road from Yorkeys Knob Road or McGregor Road. As of October 2026.

Facts checked against the venue's own website on 17 October 2026.
