Accessible and sensory-friendly things to do with kids in Sydney
Sydney has more stated-access venues than any other Australian city, and more of the sensory-friendly sessions that matter to families with an autistic child: the big museums, the aquarium, the zoo and several cinemas all publish quiet-session days and lend sensory kits. The harbour foreshore is the easy part, with flat ferries, the Barangaroo and Darling Harbour promenades and the botanic garden's sealed paths.
The beaches are patchier: a few councils lend beach wheelchairs and roll out matting in summer, and the ocean pools vary from ramped to steps-only, so the beach listings here carry what each council states. Inland, several national park boardwalks and lookouts in the Blue Mountains and the Royal are rated wheelchair-accessible and are listed with the grade.
Everything comes from the venue's or council's own page; read the fact line under each place and check the linked access page before you go.
108 places in Sydney state access or sensory facts on their own page: 19 step-free · 23 sensory-friendly sessions · 13 accessible toilet · 2 Changing Places · 0 beach wheelchair · 1 pool hoist · 68 all-abilities playgrounds.

Questions parents ask
- Which Sydney beaches have beach wheelchairs or matting?
- Several councils along the coast lend beach wheelchairs through the surf club or lifeguards and lay access matting in summer. The beach listings on this page say which, the hours and how to book; book a day or two ahead on weekends.
- Which museums run sensory-friendly mornings?
- The Australian Museum, the Powerhouse, the maritime museum and the aquarium all run quiet or relaxed sessions and lend sensory bags, usually in the school holidays. The table links each venue's page because the dates change each term.
- Is Taronga Zoo manageable in a wheelchair?
- The zoo is on a steep hillside, but it publishes an access map with the gentler routes, has a ferry-and-cable-car arrival that avoids the climb, and lends wheelchairs. The listing links its access page.
- Where are the all-abilities playgrounds?
- Many councils have built inclusive playgrounds, from the big Livvi's Place parks to smaller local ones with Liberty swings and wheelchair carousels. The playgrounds section lists the ones whose council page names the equipment.
