Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex
Last updated February 2026
The Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex is a working NASA facility and visitor centre located in the Tidbinbilla Valley, about 40 minutes southwest of Canberra city centre. Part of NASA's Deep Space Network, this site actively communicates with spacecraft exploring our solar system and beyond, including missions to Mars and the outer planets. The visitor centre features interactive exhibits about space exploration, satellite tracking, and Australia's role in global space missions. Visitors can see the massive 70-meter and 34-meter dish antennas up close and learn how they maintain contact with distant spacecraft. The facility offers both indoor exhibits and outdoor viewing areas where families can observe the impressive satellite dishes in action. **What to Bring** Sunscreen and hat for outdoor antenna viewing areas. Comfortable walking shoes for exploring the grounds. Camera for photos with the massive dish antennas. Water bottle as the site can get warm. **Best Age Range** Best for ages 8 and up who can grasp space concepts and read exhibit information. Younger children 5-7 may enjoy the interactive displays but could find some content too advanced. Teenagers and adults often find it most engaging due to the real-world space mission connections. **Good to Know** Free entry and parking available on site. Open daily except Christmas Day but check website for any maintenance closures. Small café serves light meals and snacks. The facility is wheelchair accessible throughout indoor areas. Guided tours available at set times on weekends. **Nearby** Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve is just a few minutes drive away, offering bushwalking trails and native wildlife viewing. The historic Lanyon Homestead is about 20 minutes back towards Canberra for those interested in colonial history. **Tips From Other Parents** Allow 2-3 hours to see everything properly including time to walk around the outdoor antenna areas. Visit on clear days for the best views of the satellite dishes against the mountain backdrop. Check the mission status board to see which spacecraft the dishes are currently communicating with.
