Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve
Last updated February 2026
Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve is a 5,450-hectare wildlife sanctuary located 40 minutes southwest of Canberra, offering visitors the chance to see native Australian animals in large, natural enclosures. The reserve is home to koalas, kangaroos, emus, echidnas, and a variety of native birds, with several walking trails winding through different habitats from wetlands to eucalyptus forests. Unlike traditional zoos, animals roam freely in spacious areas that closely mimic their natural environments. The reserve also features the Tidbinbilla Visitor Centre with interactive displays about local wildlife and Aboriginal culture. Multiple walking tracks cater to different fitness levels, from short 15-minute strolls to longer bush walks. **What to Bring** Comfortable walking shoes with good grip. Hat and sunscreen as many trails have limited shade. Water bottle and snacks for longer walks. Binoculars for bird watching. Camera with zoom lens for wildlife photography. **Best Age Range** Suits ages 4-12 particularly well as the animals are easier to spot than in many zoos, and the shorter walking trails are manageable for little legs. Toddlers may struggle with the walking distances and older kids might prefer more interactive experiences. **Good to Know** Free entry and free parking at the visitor centre. Open daily except Christmas Day with last entry at 4pm. The visitor centre has a café and gift shop. Some animals are more active in cooler morning and late afternoon temperatures. Wheelchair accessible paths available around the visitor centre and to some enclosures. **Nearby** Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex offers space exhibitions and tours about 10 minutes away. Lanyon Homestead provides historic house tours and picnic areas within 20 minutes drive. **Tips From Other Parents** Visit in the early morning or late afternoon when animals are most active and visible. Bring a stroller for younger kids as the distances between enclosures can be tiring. Check the feeding times at the visitor centre to maximise animal sightings.
