Green Island (patrolled swimming area)

Last updated October 2026

Green Island is a small coral cay in Green Island National Park, 27 km offshore from Cairns. Most visitors arrive on commercial charter boats from the Reef Fleet Terminal at the end of Spence Street; the trip takes 50 to 60 minutes. Queensland Parks and Wildlife says a patrolled swimming area is provided on the northern side of the island near the beach hire hut (no patrol hours are published). Snorkelling is not supervised - ask the lifeguard about safe locations on the day. Several picnic areas are provided, and toilets, showers and food outlets for day visitors are in the resort. Boardwalks and tracks are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. Dangerous stinging jellyfish may be present at any time but occur more often in the warmer months; a full-body lycra suit may give good protection. Within a short walk (OpenStreetMap): Marineland Melanesia Gift Shop (gift shop, about 100 m).
