Heritage steam train trip from Gympie Station through the Mary Valley to Amamoor, where kids can watch the engine turn on a turntable.

The Mary Valley Rattler is a restored heritage steam train that runs from the historic Gympie Station on Tozer Street through the Mary Valley. The Classic Rattler Run is a 40km return trip on the C17 steam locomotive 967 through farmland, forest and small towns, via Dagun, to the heritage village of Amamoor. At Amamoor passengers can get off and watch the locomotive being turned on the historic turntable, explore the township and visit the markets when they are on, before the return trip. As of October 2026 the website says the Classic Rattler Run departs Gympie at 9am on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and takes about 3 hours. Ticket prices are not printed on the website outside the online booking system. Prams and high chairs cannot be taken on the train because they do not fit through the carriage doors. Gympie Station has a gift shop and the Rusty Rails Cafe. Wheelchair users should book ahead by phone, as accessible spaces are limited.
