kunanyi / Mount Wellington (Wellington Park)

Families' Pick 2026 · Hobart: picked by the Funtivities team as a standout for families in Hobart.

Last updated October 2026

Free mountain park above Hobart with a drive-up summit lookout, family walks, Silver Falls and a playground at Fern Tree Park.

Wellington Park covers kunanyi / Mount Wellington above Hobart and is free to enter, with no parks pass needed. Families can drive the sealed Pinnacle Road from Fern Tree to the 1,271m summit, where lookouts and observation decks look over Hobart and south-west Tasmania; there are toilets and parking, and warm clothes are a must as the weather changes fast. Halfway up, The Springs has a picnic area, a short lookout walk, the gentle family-friendly Lookout Circuit and the Lost Freight cafe, and Sphinx Rock lookout is a short level walk away. At the bottom, Fern Tree Park has an adventure playground, picnic areas, gas barbecues and toilets, and Silver Falls is an easy walk along the wide Pipeline Track. Pinnacle Road can close for snow and ice at any time, especially April to September, and snow days bring congestion and limited parking, so check the road status first. The park is closed on Extreme or Catastrophic fire danger days. Metro buses run to Fern Tree, and public transport in Tasmania is free until June 2027.

Facts checked against the venue's own website on 17 October 2026.
