Mount Field National Park

Families' Pick 2026 · Hobart: picked by the Funtivities team as a standout for families in Hobart.

Last updated October 2026

Tasmanian national park with a short, sealed walk to Russell Falls, tall trees, wildlife and a visitor centre, about 75 minutes from Hobart.

Mount Field National Park is one of Tasmania's oldest national parks and part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Near the park entrance are the visitor centre with its Curiosity Room, picnic facilities and a sealed, wheelchair-accessible 15-minute walk through tree ferns to the three-tiered Russell Falls, which can be continued to the Tall Trees walk. A 30-minute drive up the road leads to Lake Dobson, longer day walks and, in winter, ski areas. Wallabies, wombats and echidnas are commonly seen, and platypus may be spotted in the waterways. Facilities include barbecues, a cafe, toilets, parking, camping and huts. A valid Tasmanian parks pass is needed; as of October 2026 a daily pass is $49.15 per vehicle (up to 8 people) or $24.55 per person on foot, bus or bike. Wheelchairs and a TrailRider all-terrain wheelchair can be hired from the visitor centre. The visitor centre is open 7 days: 9am-5pm from 1 December to 30 April, 9am-4pm from 1 May to 31 October and 9am-4.15pm in November.

Facts checked against the venue's own website on 17 October 2026.
