Historic goldfield near Echunga in the Adelaide Hills where families can fossick for gold with hand tools such as pans and metal detectors.
Jupiter Creek Diggings is a historic goldfield near Echunga in the Adelaide Hills where the South Australian Department for Energy and Mining allows recreational fossicking. Fossicking means gathering minerals by hand for your own collection, not for sale. Only non-mechanical tools such as gold pans, hand sluices and metal detectors are allowed, and holes must be kept small and filled in straight away. The site is heritage listed, so historic places and objects, plants, animals and waterways must not be disturbed. Park in the designated area and follow the safety signs. There are no facilities on site and no entry on total fire ban days. Camping, fires, horse riding and motorcycles are not allowed. Keep away from old mineshafts, and children and dogs must be supervised at all times. Prices are not published on the website.
Facts checked against the venue's own website on 17 October 2026.
