Surf life saving club at Collaroy Beach on Sydney's Northern Beaches, with over 1000 members. On Sundays from October to March, children aged 5 to 14 take part in Nippers activities that teach the basics of surf awareness and water safety, with skills introduced by age and ability: younger groups build confidence on the beach and in shallow surf and the ocean pool, then progress to foam and fibreglass Nipper boards, surf swimming and, at 13, the Surf Rescue Certificate. Age groups run from Under 6 to Under 14, and a child may join once they turn 5. U9-U14 Nippers can compete at branch carnivals. Membership is at least one Nipper plus one parent or guardian; new Nippers need proof of age.
