Heritage-listed convict-cut ocean rock pool below King Edward Park; free, with no access for people with mobility needs.
The Bogey Hole is a heritage-listed ocean pool cut into the rock platform below King Edward Park by convicts in 1819 for Commandant James Morisset. Visit Newcastle says it may be the earliest known purpose-built ocean swimming pool in Australia. It sits at the foot of Shepherds Hill and is reached from York Drive, with parking nearby. The listing says the site does not cater for people with access needs. Free to visit, as of October 2026.
Facts checked against the venue's own website on 14 October 2026.
