Bathers Way

Last updated October 2026

Free 6 km coastal walk from Merewether Baths to Nobbys Beach, passing ocean baths, the Bogey Hole, lookouts and a skate park.

The Bathers Way is City of Newcastle's 6 km coastal walk from Merewether Ocean Baths in the south to Nobbys Beach in the north. The council describes it as a rollercoaster route of hills and descents. Along the way are Merewether Ocean Baths, the largest ocean baths complex in the Southern Hemisphere; the 450 m Newcastle Memorial Walk; Strzelecki Lookout; the convict-carved Bogey Hole pool from 1819; South Newcastle Beach Skate Park, which has the Hunter's first wheelchair-accessible skate bowl; Newcastle Ocean Baths; and the red Grounded artwork marking the 2007 grounding of the Pasha Bulker. The walk ends at Nobbys Beach, which the council describes as ideal for families and people learning to surf. The route also passes wartime defences at Shepherd Hill and tells stories of shipwrecks, convicts and the Awabakal and Worimi peoples. There are beach kiosks and cafes to stop at, or you can bring a picnic. The walk is free.
