Surf life saving club established in 1935 at Leighton Beach, North Fremantle. Its Woodside Nippers program introduces children aged 5 to 12 to surf lifesaving on Sunday mornings at Leighton Beach, generally from October to March, with sign-in from 8.15am and beach activities from 8.45am to 10.45am. Nippers work through a Surf Life Saving Australia age-group program covering surf awareness, the beach environment and surf skills, and can take part in carnivals. Nippers from Under 8 complete a swim proficiency at the start of the season; the program is not a learn-to-swim school. Registration is each September, a parent membership is required, and a parent or guardian must stay on the beach. Each nipper receives a Woodside Nipper Pack with a coloured cap and hi-vis vest.
