Visiting Darwin with kids
Darwin with kids is the waterfront lagoon and wave pool, crocodiles up close, the WW2 history around the harbour and markets at sunset. The wet season and the heat decide the day's shape, so the plans lean on shade and water.
Pick a day
Each plan is five or six stops in a sensible order, with the photo, price, ages and hours pulled from the listing itself. Mix and match: a rainy-day stop fits any day.

| Best time | May to September: dry, warm days, cool nights, markets and festivals on; the wet season is for storms and waterfalls, not beaches |
| Budget tip | The swimming lagoon, markets, gardens and WWII sites are free; the wildlife parks, the croc cruise and Litchfield tours are the paid days |
| Rainy day backup | The museum and art gallery, the WWII tunnels, bowling; wet-season storms pass quickly |

When to go: seasons and busy times in Darwin
The next school holidays run 11 Dec 2026 to 26 Jan 2027 (Northern Territory Government); that is when the big-name places are busiest and accommodation costs most.
| Season | Months | Best for | How busy | Parent tip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wet season | Nov–Apr | Waterfalls at full roar, free museums, the wave lagoon | Quiet | Stingers and crocs rule the beaches out, and the storms are spectacular. Mornings are for walks, afternoons are for air conditioning. |
| Dry season | May–Oct | Everything outdoors: markets, sunset beaches, waterholes, bush walks | Packed | Warm days, cool nights, no rain. Mindil markets and the waterholes fill in the June–July holidays; go early in the week. |
| Build-up | Oct–Nov | Early-morning waterholes, shady walks, the museum | Quiet | Heavy and hot before the rains. Keep outdoor time to before 9am. |
| Public holidays | Jun–Aug | Free festivals and sunset events across the city | Busy | The Darwin Festival and Territory Day bring free shows; check the events theme page. |

Questions parents ask
- Where should a family stay in Darwin?
- The Waterfront or the city for the lagoons and the Esplanade; a resort with a big pool if you come in the hotter months; a holiday park out of town for space and a pool.
- Is Darwin safe for kids with the crocodiles?
- Yes if you swim only where the signs allow: the lagoons, the pools and the waterholes the park service has cleared. Treat every beach and creek as off limits.
- Kakadu or Litchfield with kids?
- Litchfield for a day: closer, with the best swimming holes. Kakadu for two or more days: rock art, cruises and bigger distances, better with kids 8 and over.
- How hot is the wet season?
- Humid and stormy from November to April, with afternoon downpours. Mornings are workable, the waterfalls are spectacular, and prices are lower; the beaches and some parks are closed to swimming.
