Organ Pipes National Park
Last updated October 2026
A small national park about 20 km north-west of Melbourne, just off the Calder Freeway, where basalt columns formed by an ancient lava flow hang above Jacksons Creek. From the car park, a short but very steep sealed path leads down to the Organ Pipes; the Left River Trail continues to Rosette Rock, where columns radiate like the spokes of a wheel, and the Tessellated Pavement. Allow about 1.5 hours to explore. The shady creek banks suit young explorers looking for wildlife and fossils, and Swamp Wallabies may be seen on the climb back. The Scoria Cone Picnic Area beside the car park has picnic tables and toilets, with more tables and toilets along the way. The steep hill may not suit everyone.
Facts checked against the venue's own website on 23 October 2026.
