Opened in 1935, Merewether Ocean Baths are described by City of Newcastle as the largest ocean baths in the Southern Hemisphere, with a main pool and a learners pool. Entry is free and the baths are open year round, but they close all day every Thursday for cleaning. Change rooms open daily from 5.30am, and a lifeguard is on duty from 9am to 5.30pm between 27 September 2026 and 26 April 2027. Facilities include showers and public toilets, and the site welcomes people with access needs, as of October 2026.
