Get Wet Surf School runs surf lessons at The Spit, Main Beach, with children's classes split by age: Squids for 6 to 9 year olds and Kids for 10 to 13 year olds. The 2-hour intro lessons run daily in the school holidays and on weekends during term, with no more than 4 kids per instructor, in safe shallow water and with no adults on big boards in the class. Kids learn the parts of the board, basic surf awareness, how to spot hazards such as rips, the steps to standing up and riding a broken wave. Family classes are for ages 8 and up, children under 6 must do a private lesson, and a 6-week Groms program covers ages 8 to 14. Surf equipment is supplied and there is free parking at The Spit.
