Royal Botanic Garden Sydney

Families' Pick 2026 · Sydney: picked by the Funtivities team as a standout for families in Sydney.

Last updated October 2026

Free harbourside botanic garden near the city with lawns for picnics, a duck pond, themed gardens and the Calyx. Open daily from 7am.

The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney is Australia's oldest botanic garden, on the harbour about a 5-minute walk from the city centre. Families can walk the paths, picnic on the lawns, look for birds and wildlife at the Main Pond and visit themed areas such as the Rose Garden, Succulent Garden, Palm Grove and the Calyx, which houses an exhibition of tropical rainforest plants. A free online Garden Explorer map lets you find plants, statues and ponds and follow self-guided tours. Entry is free except for special ticketed events. The garden is open every day of the year from 7am, with closing times that change through the year: 7:30pm in October, 8pm from November to February and as early as 5pm in June and July (as of October 2026). Most areas are accessible by walker and wheelchair, and a free wheelchair can be booked through Reception. Accessible toilets are at the Visitor Centre, Mare and Foal Lawn and the Calyx. The garden may close early in extreme weather.

Facts checked against the venue's own website on 17 October 2026.
