Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary
Last updated August 2026
A 115-hectare marine sanctuary with sandstone rock platforms right at the shore, making it one of the most accessible spots in Melbourne to introduce kids to rock-pooling and snorkelling. At low tide the platforms reveal sea stars, urchins and small fish; the free Junior Ranger program (ages 6-12, with a parent) runs seasonally and is worth timing a visit around. Go at low tide specifically - check tide times before heading out, or the rock pools will be underwater. What to Bring Closed shoes (the rocks are sharp) A snorkel/mask for older kids wanting to try the Tea House Reef North snorkelling area A bucket for rock-pool spotting Best Age Range 3-12 years for rock pooling; older kids can snorkel. Good to Know Free, no booking (though the Junior Ranger program has set session times - check ahead). Patrolled by a life saving club over summer.
