Richmond Gaol

Families' Pick 2026 · Hobart: picked by the Funtivities team as a standout for families in Hobart.

Last updated October 2026

Self-guided visit to Australia's oldest intact colonial gaol in Richmond, with a Things to Find challenge for kids.

Richmond Gaol is Australia's oldest intact colonial gaol, built between 1825 and 1840 in the historic village of Richmond, about 25 minutes by car from Hobart. Visitors explore the original cells, courtyards and buildings at their own pace, including solitary confinement cells, the flogging yard, the Gaoler's House and the cookhouse with its original oven, and read the stories of convicts held there, such as Ikey Solomon. Children can pick up a Things to Find sheet and take part in the Things to Find Challenge. The gaol says some prison spaces may be unsettling for younger children, so parents can choose which areas to visit. As of October 2026 entry is $12 for adults, $6 for children and $30 for a family (2 adults and children aged 5-16). It is open 9am to 5pm every day except Christmas Day. Advance booking is not normally needed for general admission. Allow 30 to 60 minutes. The gaol is within walking distance of Richmond Bridge, cafes and shops.

Facts checked against the venue's own website on 17 October 2026.
