La Trobe’s Cottage
Last updated October 2026
La Trobe's Cottage is described by the National Trust as Melbourne's oldest surviving building. It was the home of Victoria's first Lieutenant-Governor, Charles Joseph La Trobe, and his wife and children from 1839 to 1854, and sits in The Domain near the Shrine of Remembrance. It is open Sundays 1pm to 4pm, with last entry at 3.30pm, and closes on days of extreme heat. Entry is adults $5, children and concession $4, family $12. The garden is re-created with plants available in the 1840s and 1850s, and group tours can be booked.
