Fremantle Prison

Families' Pick 2026 · Perth: picked by the Funtivities team as a standout for families in Perth.

Last updated October 2026

World Heritage convict prison in Fremantle with free gatehouse exhibits and guided tours; family pass $73 for a single prison tour.

Fremantle Prison is Western Australia's only World Heritage listed building, a convict-built prison from the 1850s that is now open for guided tours. Entry to the Gatehouse complex, with the visitor centre, Convict Depot exhibition and gift shop, is free; going further inside is by guided tour only. The Convict Prison Tour covers the convict era up to 1886 and leaves every hour from 10am to 5pm, taking 1 hour 15 minutes. The Behind Bars, True Crime and Torchlight tours are not recommended for children under 10 because of their content, and the underground Tunnels Tour has a minimum age of 12. As of October 2026 a single prison tour costs $25 adult, $15 child and $73 for a family pass (2 adults and up to 3 children aged 4 to 15). The Gatehouse is open daily 9am to 5pm. Tickets can be bought on the day, but tours can sell out in school holidays, so booking ahead is recommended. Tours involve stairs. Paid parking is outside on The Terrace via Fothergill Street.

Facts checked against the venue's own website on 17 October 2026.
