Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary
Last updated February 2026
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife park and conservation facility located at Currumbin on the southern Gold Coast, approximately 25 kilometres south of Surfers Paradise. The sanctuary is operated as a not-for-profit facility by the National Trust of Australia (Queensland) and focuses on Australian native wildlife, with a collection that includes koalas, kangaroos, crocodiles, Tasmanian devils, wombats, and a wide range of native bird species. The sanctuary is best known for its twice-daily rainbow lorikeet feeding events, which have been a feature of the site since the 1940s, where hundreds of wild lorikeets descend to feed from trays held by visitors. A TreeTop Challenge high-ropes course operates within the sanctuary grounds for older children and adults. The setting is expansive and more garden-like than many urban zoos. **What to Bring** Comfortable walking shoes and sunscreen are essential for the outdoor grounds. The lorikeet feeding involves birds landing on extended arms — wearing a light long-sleeved layer is worth considering. A camera for the lorikeet feeding event is worthwhile as the spectacle is visually striking. **Best Age Range** The sanctuary works from around 2 years and up. The lorikeet feeding and kangaroo encounters are accessible and engaging for children from toddler age. The TreeTop Challenge is available to older children and teenagers meeting the minimum weight requirements. **Good to Know** The lorikeet feeding events run at set times in the morning and late afternoon; checking the schedule and arriving to see at least one is strongly recommended. The sanctuary's not-for-profit status means entry fees are directed to conservation programs. The koala photo experience is available for an additional fee. **Nearby** Currumbin Beach is approximately 5 minutes from the sanctuary and works well for an afternoon visit following the morning session at the wildlife park. Palm Beach and Coolangatta are within 10–15 minutes south by car. **Tips From Other Parents** Timing the visit around the lorikeet feeding events is considered essential — arriving for the morning session and then exploring the rest of the sanctuary at leisure is the most popular approach. The kangaroo paddock is a highlight comparable to Lone Pine for the hands-on feeding experience.
