Port Arthur Historic Site

Families' Pick 2026 · Hobart: picked by the Funtivities team as a standout for families in Hobart.

Last updated October 2026

World Heritage convict settlement on the Tasman Peninsula with 30+ historic buildings, a harbour cruise included, and family-friendly grounds.

Port Arthur Historic Site on the Tasman Peninsula is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed former convict settlement with more than 30 historic buildings, ruins, restored houses and heritage gardens to explore. Entry includes a 20-minute harbour cruise, which the site says children love, and free 10 to 15-minute guide talks through the day, plus a free audio experience to download. Most visitors spend half a day to a full day, and entry tickets are valid for two consecutive days. As of October 2026 general entry is $55 adult, $27.50 child and $44 concession. The kids' page says children 6 and under are free but still need a ticket booked. Optional tours include the Escape from Port Arthur tour about runaway convicts; ghost tours are recommended for ages 14 and over. The site is open daily from 9am to 5pm and closed only on Christmas Day. The grounds are large, so the site recommends bringing a pram for young children, though some houses are only reached by stairs. Families can bring their own food.

Facts checked against the venue's own website on 17 October 2026.
