Lake Alexander
Last updated October 2026
Lake Alexander is a man-made saltwater lake in East Point Reserve, built for recreation in 1991. It covers 3.5 hectares with a maximum depth of 2.8 metres. Fresh seawater is pumped in each day at high tide, and a filter on the pump limits the risk of box jellyfish and Irukandji getting in. The NT Government lists it as safe to swim all year. There are no lifeguards: City of Darwin asks swimmers to take care, obey all signs and swim at their own risk, and it publishes an open/closed status on its page from regular water-quality testing. Upside-down (Cassiopea) jellyfish can bloom late in the dry season and may sting, particularly children - stay out while they are present. The council lists a playground, BBQs, showers, picnic tables, drinking fountains, bike and walking paths and accessible facilities.
Facts checked against the venue's own website on 22 October 2026.
