Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park in Sydney's north is Australia's second-oldest national park, with creeks, mangroves, rainforest, cliffs and lookouts. For families, Bobbin Head is the main day-trip spot, with barbecues, picnic shelters, lawns, a children's playground, a mangrove boardwalk, cafes and pedal boat hire. Nearby, the Kalkari Discovery Centre (402 Ku-ring-gai Chase Road, Mount Colah) runs activities for children, such as making a model wombat burrow or playing Aboriginal games, plus the short Kalkari discovery trail; it is open 9:30am to 4:30pm daily except Christmas Day. Junior ranger tours for kids aged 6 to 12 run in some school holidays. Older kids can walk to the Basin Aboriginal art site, take the Barrenjoey Lighthouse walk or camp at The Basin. Entry is $12 per vehicle per day (as of October 2026), payable with the Park'nPay app. The park is always open but can close for bad weather or fire danger, and the West Head gates close overnight.
