The Best Family Days Out in Cairns & the Tropical North
By The Funtivities Team · 7 min read
Cairns is one of Australia's most underrated family destinations. From the Great Barrier Reef to the Daintree Rainforest, here are the best things to do with kids in the tropical north.
Our Favourite Family Days Out in Cairns
We moved to Far North Queensland three years ago, and honestly, I still pinch myself some mornings. The kids wake up, we throw on rashies and thongs, and within twenty minutes we're somewhere that looks like a postcard. Cairns and the tropical north is one of those places that just hands you adventure on a platter — you barely have to plan anything.
But I know that when you're visiting (or even when you live here like us), it can feel overwhelming. There's SO much to do, and half the stuff you find on Google is aimed at backpackers or retirees. So here's our honest, been-there-done-that guide to the best family days out in Cairns and surrounds. These are places we've actually taken our two kids (aged 3 and 6) and genuinely enjoyed.
The Esplanade Lagoon — Your Daily Go-To
If you only do one thing in Cairns with kids, make it the Esplanade Lagoon. It's free, it's patrolled by lifeguards, and it's genuinely one of the best public swimming spots in Australia. We go at least three times a week.
The lagoon is a huge saltwater swimming pool right on the foreshore. There's a shallow wading area that's perfect for toddlers — my youngest was splashing around in there from about 18 months old. The deeper section suits older kids who want to actually swim. And the best part? There's shade, BBQ areas, toilets, and a massive grassy area for running around afterwards.
Our pro tip: Get there before 9am on weekends. By 10am in school holidays it's packed. We usually bring a picnic blanket, some sandwiches, and make a morning of it. The kids are absolutely knackered by lunchtime, which means a glorious afternoon nap for everyone.
The playground right next to the lagoon got upgraded recently too — it's got water play features, climbing structures, and those spinning disc things that make my stomach turn but the kids absolutely love.
Hartley's Crocodile Adventures — Worth Every Dollar
I'll be honest, when someone first suggested Hartley'
